Director of Avalanche Warnings (Tyrol, Austria)
Dr. Mair was born in Innsbruck, Austria. He attended high school in Innsbruck, studying Latin and ancient Greek. He went on to study Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Innsbruck and continued there through 1988, earning a Masters in Natural Sciences, specializing in Glaciology. He was employed at the German Research Ministry, with a stay in Snow & Ice research work in Antarctica. He has been a member of the Tyrolean Mountain Rescue Team (since 1979) and Director of the Avalanche Warning Service of the Tyrol, Austria (since 1999). He has been a forensic expert for Meteorology, Avalanche Science, Avalanche Accidents and Avalanche Protection. His doctoral thesis in Natural Science focused on the Galtuer Avalanche Catastrophe in Austria (Feb. 23.1999) from the vantage point of meteorology and avalanche science. Since 2011, he has, in addition to his other responsibilities, been a lecturer for the University of Avalanche Research in Innsbruck. He is handling all the actions for BRASS in Europe.
